Six.

"But now I am six and I'm clever as clever." --A.A. Milne, Now We Are Six

"But now I am six."

This is six. ❤

"And I'm clever as clever."

Three weeks ago, Ellie turned six.

Happy birthday to the girl who, when asked how she felt about being six replied, "Not good! I want to be  young."

I've heard ages five and six (and a few years beyond?) referred to as "the Golden Ages."

Well, we sailed through five mostly unscathed; a few weeks into six and so far (furiously knocking wood!)  I can't help but agree. Ellie is a full-fledged little person. In the last year I've seen her morph into a little companion too. Oh sure, she still demands snacks at a break neck pace, and has a talent for asking me to open her jar of vitamins at just the moment that I'm balancing two backpacks, a cup of coffee and usually, a toddler or two. But now she can laugh about it, whereas last year she would just look at me blankly, as if to say: What? Are you busy or something?

But she's also growing more independent.  She squealed with pride when she realized a few months ago that she no longer needed to stand on a chair to wash her hands at the kitchen sink.

Untitled

She continues to be incredible with her younger brother and sister. She's still quick to suggest a solution to spat between babies or a remedy for tears: "I think Harry wants his water, Mommy." Or "Lucy's saying her car seat is too tight!" A few weeks ago I found myself home with just the babies. First of all, Harry and Lucy were downright bored with me. Where was their little playmate? Their ringleader? They both shuffled around the backyard looking forlorn. Lucy kept asking me, "Where's Ellie? Ellie?" And I found myself missing her too.

Ellie continues to love art, especially drawing ("What should I draw?" is her nightly, post-dinner question). I make suggestions: Mermaids? Gymnastic girls? (hey, it's what I used to draw). And every night she comes up with a better idea. "I know Mommy! A circus! With girls on a wire and clowns!" While I clean the kitchen and prep lunches for the next day, Ellie draws.

Aaaaand of course, this. I melt.

This year, Ellie learned to read. It seemed to just click one day as I suppose it often does. For months and months she was sounding out words, fumbling and struggling. Then one day she was calling out signs from the back of the mini van and reading cereal boxes to me at the grocery store. The sight of a child's world opening up as words come alive in front of them, well that will just never, ever get old.

She's becoming increasingly sensitive (in a good way) showing a growing capacity for empathy. She holds doors. She apologizes for stepping on your toe or rushing in front of you to get down the stairs. The awareness of others' emotions is startling and I've found myself having to become more aware of my tone and even facial expressions: "Mommy? Are you getting frustrated? Mommy, are you having a hard time?" Ay yi yi. Out of the mouths of babes...

One night during bedtime a few months ago, I sighed, probably a little too loudly. "What's wrong?" Ellie asked. 'I'm just tired,' I replied (I think we did something nervy, like leave the house with all four kids). 'Today was a lot of work. A lot of fun,' I quickly added, 'but a lot of work.'

Ellie was quite for a minute. And then she said, "I don't have that feeling, that feeling of work," Ellie said. "I just have fun. In the sun!"

The little foot. She had me at the little foot.
Look at that foot. That little foot.

Bed times are no longer a battle (not that they were ever too bad, they were just loooong and involved a lot of water and blanket adjusting and stuffed animal placement). Full disclosure: Most nights, she's still in our bed by 2 a.m. Aside from the fact that it sometimes feels like I'm sleeping with a pony (those elbows! those knees!), I'm not in a huge hurry to put an end to it. I know from experience. She won't want to climb into our bed forever.

Oh to have her self-confidence. May she never lose it.

This is SO Ellie. As she says, "A girl's gotta dance!"

This drawing is almost a year old and her handwriting has vastly improved (it's from the first month of kindergarten) but I just loved the sentiment.

I almost pinch myself sometimes--I feel so blessed to be able to witness Ellie growing into her role as big sister, and to watch her relationship with her younger siblings grow and bloom. Especially these two. They are quite the pair.

She still wants to play with Leo all the time and can't understand why he doesn't feel the same way. It's clear that he needs more alone time these days. But when they do play together? And it clicks? And she's the fairy and he's some sort of fantastic mash-up of Iron Man and Spiderman and probably also wearing a dress? Well, it's a sight to see.

They also like to dance.

Ellie's daily observations continue to slay me. Sometimes she says them faster than I can write them down (thank goodness for the little yellow memo pad on my phone).

During a particularly explosive Lucy meltdown: "That Lucy! She's just a big piece of work!"

She wasn't really mad at Lucy though, because minutes later, she was trying to cheer her little sister up: "Lucy? Do you want to go be ladies in the pool?"

After a visit to and (purchase at) a candy store: "Nothing can stop me from eating fudge!" (She has quite the sweet tooth and thinks breakfast really should come with desert (naturally, it should be fudge).

After school chillaxin.
Ellie, watching Lucy be sassy to me (I believe she screamed no and stomped her little feet about seventeen times): "Look Mommy! Lucy's being like a queen!"

Ellie: "Oh Mommy, you know everything."
Me: 'Well no one knows everything.'
Ellie: "I know. I'm just trying to make you feel good."

Untitled

"Can I sit in your lap even when I'm thirteen?"

I just...I don't even know what to say about this. :)

And perhaps, my all-time favorite, about two months ago, after a simple lunch at home of cheese ravioli and sliced strawberries, Ellie looked up at me and said:

"You know what? You can't beat love. You know what that means Mommy? Love always wins."

Amen, Ellie. Amen.

Happy birthday, Sweetheart. We love you so very much and can't wait to see what six brings you.

Life-y Chaos With a Side of Tooth Fairy

Untitled
Sunday morning at our house. Babies and big kids on Leo's bed. Who needs a trampoline?

Ellie's been talking about how one of her teeth was "kind of wibbly." (That's wobbly for those of you who don't speak kindergartener.)
First lost tooth=extra cheesy grin.
Sure enough, Friday night when I got home from work, came the news: Ellie's lost her first tooth!

"Do I look kind of cool when I smile now?" She asked me, ready to pose.

Uh, I think we all know the answer to that question. Does she even have to ask? Beyond cool, my dear.

By the way, wibbly? I thought Ellie might be out of that phase of saying words not quite right, rendering them instantly adorable, but apparently not (I think prime time for this is around age 3 1/2 to four). Just last week I overheard her and Leo discussing owls and how they can see at night:
upload
"Of course they can!" huffed Ellie. "They're octurnal!"
Untitled
The frigid temperatures blessedly eeked above freezing this weekend. We had a little snow on Friday night, not enough to do much, but enough to puzzle and amuse the babies a bit.
Untitled
And of course, make snow angels. Ellie can never resist.
Untitled
Harry appreciated the snow. But once he discovered the muddy water filled-bird bath? Forget it. No competition. The little man knows what's good.

Adding to the List of Nicknames While Packing, Beautifying and Breathing

Long ago, Lucy became (at least to me) Lou or Louie. If she was being especially naughty, she became Louis. My own mother only used my full name when she was cross with me, maybe that's why. Louis feels more formal, don't you think?
LucySlide
Now, may I present to you: Evil Kanevil. AKA Crazycakes. Or maybe we should just call her Fearless.
Untitled
Yes, this is the baby who isn't yet walking (cruising all over town, will hold your hand while walking but will not yet brave it alone) yet she stands at the bottom of the stairs and literally rattles the gate. If allowed, she would climb those stairs faster than you can say Evilkanevilcrazycakes. And believe me, she's tried. And succeeded (don't ask). She's also a fan of slide climbing (see top photo, as she plans her ascent).
Untitled
She also learned how to scoot the stool the big kids use to wash their hands, over to the ottoman and climb said ottoman.
Untitled
Yes, this incredibly innocent little creature is actually quite devious. Not to mention, she is a workout. Take her away from the spot of acrobatics du jour and she goes right back to it. And then she laughs at you.
Untitled
She's pouting here. Because I wouldn't let her push that cushion over to the love seat and use the cushion as a ladder. To climb the loveseat, of course. (By the way, we do normally wear clothes in our house it was just really really hot that day). Like, really hot.

Can you hear the eyeballs rolling out of my head?

luggagefor6
In other news, I've been very busy packing for five people (see above). I must be one of the worst packers on the planet. I'm sure it would be easier if I wasn't interrupted every fifteen seconds. And when I do get uninterrupted time it's about fifteen o'clock and I'm plain exhausted and not thinking straight and bed just seems so much more appealing.

Like everything at our house, it will get done, maybe at the eleventh hour, but we will not arrive at the airport without luggage. We might not have the world's most organized carry-on bag and we might forget something, but the good news is, we're not going to Mars so I'm pretty sure if we run out of baby wipes we'll be able to buy them at our final destination.

I'm in slight denial about the cross country flight with twin toddlers but I'm going to do my best to channel my Disneyworld "Can Do" attitude. I'll be whistling "Hakuna Matata" and thinking about the end reward which is family, friends and the best beer and coffee in the world (yes, I know you can get Stumptown in New York now but there is something about visiting the Mother Ship that is incomparable).

Untitled
This weekend, Ellie and I had a little "Day of Beauty." OK I may be overstating it slightly: We both got haircuts, I got a pedicure and she got a manicure (her first! Sniff!). As I always do, I reveled in the one kid glory and with my ability to focus all my attention on one person, rather than feeling like I'm being pulled in nineteen different directions. Not that there is anything wrong with nineteen different directions (it's our new normal and for the most part, I'm all in) but it's nice for all of us to get that little respite.

I think everyone agrees.

Five

My big girl is five today.

Ellie5
Ellie, this post would not be a birthday post without the requisite I remember the day you were born like it was yesterday, waking before dawn and speeding through the Lincoln Tunnel toward the hospital in New York City.
EllieOneDayOld
A quick ultrasound right before your birth told us you'd be "around seven pounds." Ha. You were nine pounds, eleven ounces of squishy, substantial, pink newborn goodness. When my doctor pulled you out she proclaimed "You just gave birth to a toddler!"

Meeting your extremely proud and excited (though here, a tad nervous) big brother Leo.

And now:
ElliePool070412
This year you learned to swim and you are a confirmed fish (as long as you have your goggles).

On the cusp of kindergarten, you are learning to read. "Zoo," "Lucy," and "Harry" are a few of your sight words. Your handwriting is coming along and you are very interested in how words are formed. At night we lie in your bed after reading Mrs. Piggle Wiggle and you ask me "Mommy, what does 'i-r-c-e' spell? What does 's-r-k-t' spell?" Your eyes are round with anticipation and when I say the "words" you collapse into giggles.

You still love pink but have branched out to purple and red. You have a serious sweet tooth and love to pile gummy bears and M&Ms on your ice cream (Why not? You only live once.) You also have amazing willpower and patience (when you want to). Almost every day you save something "special" from your lunch box for the ride home from school. Be it fruit snacks or dehydrated strawberries or the rare piece of chocolate I throw in there as a treat "just because." "Why do you save things?" I asked you once. "Because then I have something to look forward to for later," you replied. Good answer.

You just discovered chewing gum. You love drawing and painting. You are still incredibly social but you are becoming more independent, able to play alone or with Leo, with Ponies or Legos for longer and longer stretches. You love to make beds for all your dollies and babies and stuffed animals. You love to take walks. Not that we spend many days at home anymore but when we do you say "Mommy, are we going anywhere today?"
photo
You are the best big sister two babies could ask for. You amaze and impress me daily with your generosity and patience when it comes to these twin troublemakers. I don't think I've once seen you show jealousy or exasperation (I'm still working on the latter, when it comes to those two). You anticipate their needs better than I do sometimes and are quick to make sweet suggestions: "Mommy I think Lucy wants her bottle." The other morning I was rushing to finish getting dressed and Harry was screaming in his crib and you bolted out of the room. I assumed it was because the crying was too much, but no, you just left to go get him some toys--you returned immediately with an armful of stuffed animals which you deposited swiftly into his crib: a monkey and your beloved pink baby beluga, of course.

You know exactly what you like and don't like and I respect you tremendously for this.

And you can never get too many snuggles.

Happy birthday, Ellie. I can't wait to see what five brings for you!

Away They Go

FirstDaySchool2011
No matter that Leo's bus didn't show up (hey, you can't have everything, right?) and I ended up driving him.

Leo is off to second grade, Ellie is back to pre-k.

Love these little people to death, but right now I am humming "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year."

Happy back to school to all!
