Just Wondering

What is it about having a child with Down syndrome that causes people to ask incredibly personal and in my view, inappropriate questions?

I wish I knew. I mean, I know there was some alcohol involved (just returned from next door neighbor's 40th birthday bash and the red wine was a-flowin') but come on. Would I Have Had My Son if I Had Known? Um, I don't know. It's Saturday night...it's a party and I have NEVER FREAKING MET YOU. Do I want to discuss this?

Just wondering. Why some people are the way they are.

Holy crap. Unbelievable. I would not have known what to say, I would have been in shock.

Sorry they put a damper on your Saturday night. Completely rude and tactless. Not to mention damn nosy.

There are some truly awesome people out there, but I have to say that a good many of them just plain suck.

Oh MY GOD.

So what did you say?

This morning a woman at the bookstore stared at Sophie for a good 5 seconds announced, "She's sweet."

Not the same thing. And yet the same in that I felt totally invaded. I smiled and said, "Not always!"

So what did you say? I always imagine great comebacks but wind up sheepishly answering whatever inappropriate question has been asked....

I hope you thought of something inappropriate to say back, like, "Hey, did you know your husband's staring at that woman's boobs over there?"

Hey,
I missed commenting on your spring NYC "postcard."
Rave review! I could hear George Gershwin in the background. Rhapsody in Blue. Only thing, the images were all in black/white (Thanks, Woody).

Alcohol doesn't excuse inappropriate behavior.
Crossing a line is crossing a line in whatever department. Sad that people can be so rude without having a clue.

yeah, that would be the worst. we live in enough of a bubble that i haven't had that experience yet, but i'm girding myself for it.

the worst so far for us was an old family friend who was so subconsciously uncomfortable around us that all she kept saying was "he's so healthy!" as if that was a normal thing to say to someone with a baby... oy.
